TOPIC: Hearing And Doing The Word (Anglican Devotional 27 February 2021)

READ: Matthew 7:21 -29 (NKJV)

  1. ” Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
  2. “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’
  3. “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
  4. ” Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:
  5. “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
  6. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:
  7. “and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”
  8. And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,
  9. for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

THE MESSAGE:

Without mincing words, the passage today shows us that ‘staying in Church, fellowship or any Christian gathering’ from Sunday to Sunday and participating fully in such gatherings, is not a guarantee to entering into Heaven. The qualifications for entrance are hearing and doing the word of God! It is important to hear the Word of God, for faith comes from hearing His Word (Romans 10:17). It is more important to do what is heard; faith without works is dead (James 2:18-20). Hearing without doing could be deceptive (James 1:22).

The changes in life do not happen preferentially. Given that life’s circumstances may not always favour one, the only guarantee to standing tall and strong after the rains have descended, the floods have come and the winds have blown and beaten on one’s ‘house’ (faith), is holding on to the word heard and doing same (verse 25). Calling Jesus Lord, performing miracles, prophesying, casting out demons and even raising the dead in His Name, without doing His word are all exercises in futility and will attract a condemnation at last (verse 23). Doing all the above in His Name and in accordance with His Word will attract the commendation… “thou good and faithful servant… “Be a wise man – build on the Rock by hearing and doing His Word!

PRAYER: Help me dear Lord, to daily build on You, the Rock, till I see You face to face. Amen.
